La La Land Sweeps the 89th Annual Academy Award Oscar with 14 Nominations

This morning, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences broke with tradition when it came to announcing the nominations for the 89th Annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles. Instead of a press conference, the nominations were broadcast live from Members of the Academy, past nominees and winners like Jennifer Hudson, Glenn Close, Terrence Howard and Brie Larson took turns speaking about their experience at the Oscars and reading the names of the nominees. The Oscars will be broadcast live from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood at 8:30 p.m. ET on February 26, 2017.

“Moonlight” is going head to head against “La La Land” for Best Motion Picture and seven other categories as well. Trailing behind them is “Manchester by the Sea” with six nominations. Diversity was embraced by the members of the Academy, nominating the best of the best, regardless of race. This year is the first year in the Academy’s history that actors of color have been nominated in every category. This year also marks a number of non-white nominations in a range of other categories as well, including Barry Jenkins for Best Director and Bradford Young for Best Cinematographer.

“La La Land,” with its 14 nominations, has tied with “All About Eve” and “Titanic” for the record. Meryl Streep is up for a Best Actress Award as the sweet, but incredibly tonedeaf Florence Foster Jenkins from the movie of the same name. The film, equally sweet, was neither a critical nor a financial success. Viola Davis is up for her third Best Supporting Actress nomination with her role in “Fences,” and “Arrival” is a surprisingly strong contender, as the Academy is known for not liking science fiction films. It picked up nine nominations, but leading actress Amy Adams was snubbed. After 10 years of getting the professional cold shoulder from Hollywood, Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge” is up for six awards.

The fight for Best Actor is going to be really tough this year. Denzel Washington (“Fences”) is up against Ryan Gosling (“La La Land”) and Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”).

Below is the entire list of nominations.
