Zverev topples reigning 🇨🇭🎾 star
The result that a relative newcomer, some "next gen" kid 👶🏻, and a young German rising star upset the big Swiss cheese ought to seem like a complete shocker, right? 🙀 Who, what, where...was there a masked man involved?
No, there was no masked man in this match. Just Stan Wawrinka, the "Other" Swiss Maestro, most recently the US Open Champion, and the new(ish) to the tour, Alexander "Sasha" Zverev from Germany.
Stan The Man doesn't have a habit of losing finals, so on one hand shock can be expected. And yet, Sasha is a new raw talent everyone has been talking about, along with the Austrian Dominic Thiem, all year long. He's racked up some pretty impressive wins against top ten players, and has made it deep into several tournaments this year.
Everyone has been waiting and watching for Sasha to have his breakout tournament since he moved from the juniors to the pro tour. It's just Stan's unlucky moment that Sasha finally broke through right now.
Zverev becomes the first man to beat Wawrinka in a tour final since 2013, snapping an 11-match win streak in finals for the Swiss star, who had been trying to win back-to-back titles in his first tournament since the US Open. The loss also ends a 10-match unbeaten run for Wawrinka.
