The death penalty was reinstated in the United States in 1976, and to this day, 31 states still continue to allow capital punishment. So far in 2016, 20 people have been executed.
As the years have gone by, the number of death sentences and executions in the US has declined. The subject is highly controversial. In hopes of keeping the conversation alive, photographer Henry Hargreaves has created a series of photos entitled “A Year of Killing,” in which he recreates the last meals of each person on death row this year.
Most people are aware, from seeing this depicted in movies, that death row prisoners can choose what their last meal will be. Through official documents to which he was given access, Hargreaves was able to recreate and then photograph some prisoners’ final meals.
