Nicholas Alkemade was a British WW II pilot who is famously known for the highest free fall of 5.6 Kilometers without a parachute! His aircraft had caught fire after a grueling dog fight, and rather than staying in the aircraft and being burnt alive he decided to jump out. He landed on a couple of thick pine trees and very deep snow. Miraculously he survived and only suffered a twisted ankle! He later said that he lit a cigarette while waiting to be found. He was suspected of spying by the Germans after he told them what had happened to him until the wreckage of his aircraft was discovered a few days later! He was imprisoned until the end of the war and returned to the UK as a hero.
