Tropical storm Florence hung over the Carolinas and buffeted the region with heavy rains on Saturday, after it landed as a hurricane and left five people dead, including a baby.

Florence landed ashore in North Carolina as a Category 1 hurricane on Friday, and was downgraded to a tropical storm the same afternoon. However, it continues to wreak havoc, showering rain, downing trees and damaging homes.

As night fell, it moved into South Carolina with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph, leaving people trapped in flooded homes and threatening slow and steady destruction and human suffering.

The storm's powerful surges, winds and rain made some towns look like rushing rivers. It's expected to linger over parts of the Carolinas over the weekend, torrential rain pounding some areas repeatedly, according to CNN.

It is grinding over the eastern states, with winds of 65 mph (105 km/h).

Weather forecasters warn of life-threatening flash flooding in parts of North and South Carolina, and Virginia, according to the BBC.

Florence's five fatalities included a mother and her baby killed after a tree crashed on their house in Wilmington, the city's police department said. The father was admitted to hospital with injuries.

In Hampstead, emergency responders going to a call for cardiac arrest found their path blocked by fallen trees. When they got to the home, the woman had dead, authorities said.

Two men were also killed in Lenoir County: One was electrocuted while connecting a generator and the other while looking out for his dogs, emergency officials said.
