In light of the sexual harassment allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, U.S. television host Padma Lakshmi has said women should disclose sexual assault even if happened years ago.
26We all have a lot to lose if we put a time limit on telling the truth about sexual assault.27
In an opinion piece in The New York Times, she has explained why she kept silent after allegedly being raped on a date by a man more than 30 years ago.
She said that after the alleged assault she herself felt guilty and that she now understands why many women don’t report such assaults.
Her piece was written in reaction to the allegations surrounding Trump’s choice for the Supreme Court. The President has discounted the allegations by two women, one being Professor Christine Blasey Ford.
The President tweeted on September 21: “I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!”
The allegations against Kavanaugh date back to the 1980s. He has denied them.
Dr. Ford is set to testify before a U.S. Senate committee this week.
