“I’m doing this project since the #elephant population has dropped greatly in the last 40 years. Then, Thailand had 6,000 elephants. Today, it has only about 3,200,” said Theerapat Trungprakan, the genial owner of a #farm in a lush valley an hour’s drive from #ChiangMai is home to 55 elephants.
“We spend more time with elephants than with wife,” he smiled.
This isn’t a #camp where elephants entertain visitors – painting with their trunks, playing soccer, or dancing – as I noticed in astonishing brochures of some camps.
It’s a #conservation and #breeding program to make sure they’re healthy and well-fed and increase their population, which offers full and half-day programs to #tourists to offset its lack of #funding from the #government or foundations.
