Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano 13,803 ft above sea level and 33,100 ft including what’s hidden below the sea, which makes it the tallest mountain on Earth. It is about one million years old and it hasn’t erupted for the last 4600 years. In Hawaiian language Mauna Kea means “white snow.” According to their mythology, its peak is one of the sacred places on the Big Island and is home to Poliahu - the icy goddess.
MAUNA KEA OBSERVATORIES
The summit of Mauna Kea is one of the best spots in the world for astronomical observation due to its unique location - the highest peak on the most isolated island chain in the Pacific Ocean. Dark skies and dry atmosphere make it an excellent spot for stargazing.
