Mexico 1970 World Cup

#Mexico hosted their first #WorldCup, and the first ever World Cup tournament outside of #Europe or #SouthAmerica in 1970. Mexico had struggled up to that point on the international stage, having been easily defeated  in the 1930 World Cup, and failing to even qualify for the World Cup for 2 decades. After 5 subsequent trips to the #tournament, and failing to make it out of group play for any of those appearances, the hosts had something to prove when footballs biggest stage came to Mexico for the first time.

#Team Mexico set to take on The Soviet Union

After a very tight draw with The Soviet Union, #ElTri went on to defeat El Salvador 4-0, #Belgium 1-0, and for the first time ever, make it past group stage. The hosts went on to make it to the quarterfinals, the furthest they have advanced to date in any World Cup, where they lost to #Italy 4-1.
