A while ago, the only day my boyfriend and I could see each other was Sunday. One or the other of us was working the rest of the week, and that was the only day we both had off. So we had a routine. It usually started with me hopping on the train to go see him early Sunday morning every week.
I vividly remember standing on the Belmont brown, purple, and red line platform on a chilly day, wrapped in my coat and shivering slightly. I had heard a train coming just as I stuck my CTA card in the turnstile. I remember grabbing it as quickly as I could and running up the stairs because I didn't know if it was my train or not.
When I got to the top, I found out that it didn't matter, because I missed the train anyway. That fact combined with the early hour meant that I was the only one on the platform.
So I waited, with my headphones plugged in my ears like usual. Ever since high school, that had been the way that I dealt with the world. That's why I didn't hear the gentleman come up behind me until he was there next to me, waving and trying to get my attention.
