Another option if you're flying is to pack all your gear up securely in a big box and ship it to the hotel where you'll be staying. Obviously, this only works if you plan everything very carefully and are booking a hotel in advance instead of just riding and finding some place to stay when you get tired.
This can be a good alternative option if you find that carry-on fees are ridiculous, or you're particularly worried about the airline losing your luggage. If you plan on bringing back a lot of souvenirs, you might want the extra space in your carry-on for when you come back home. Why not make the room now so you know exactly what you're working with?
