The spring Gala is called the Oscars of the East Coast and technically, signals the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual blockbuster show, which this year focuses on iconic Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo and her work on the Comme des Garçons label.

The extravaganza is definitely the best chance for many of us to gawk at the scores of celebrities invited to the grand affair; all come dressed to impress.

Katy Perry, who is co-host along with Pharrell Williams, also made a splash floating onto the red carpet in a scarlet Maison Margiela creation - eliciting both gasps and sighs - presumably of adoration.

The Kings & Queens of the fashion realm come together. World renowned fashionistas, glamouristas, celebrities, haute couture magicians and most of the fashion-art world in one night of celebration focused on the genius of one designer.
Designer Rei Kawakubo whose work is the focus this year has always been the ultimate rebel. She is the first living designer to be honored a show at the Met Gala since Yves St.Laurent in 1983.
