Lucian Grainge is the Chairman/CEO of Universal Music Group.
Under Grainge, UMG has become what may be the most dominant company in the history of the recorded-music business. With seven of 2015's 10 best-selling albums and 38.5 percent of the year's recorded-music sales, according to Nielsen Music. It has all five Grammy album of the year nominees: Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Chris Stapleton and Alabama Shakes; the second-biggest music publishing company; and a fast-growing merchandising division that has deals with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. It's no wonder or surprise why Grainge's contract has been extended to 2020.
Over the course of his career, he has been instrumental in the careers of artists such as Amy Winehouse, ABBA, Eurythmics, Rihanna, Sam Smith, Take That, Psychedelic Furs, The Rolling Stones, Sting, U2, Jamie Cullum and Andrea Bocelli...just to name a few. Grainge has worked in the music business for his entire career. In 2013 and 2015, he topped Billboard Magazine’s “Power 100” list as the most powerful person in the music business, the only person in history to top that list twice.
