4. Crystal clear skies means this is the place for star gazing

Extremely dry, crystal-clear, with almost no clouds or #lightpollution, the #Atacama is also a perfect place for #star-gazing.

One day, we drove past the world's biggest land-based #observatory, built in 2013 for an international partnership of #astronomers from North America, Europe and Asia with the cooperation of #Chile, a 40-minute drive from San Pedro. Called ALMA for short, the Atacama Millimeter/submillimeter Array consists of 66 high-precision antennas.

Intrigued, I took a late-night #tour of the Ahlarkapin Observatory, located across the road from Tierra Atacama. The #guide, Danilo, afire with passion for his topic, bombarded us with facts about the #stars and how the #sky helped many cultures #plant and harvest crops and tell #time throughout the centuries.
