The Courtyard

Siobhan pressed number two for English on her headset and was greeted by a heavily accented voice.

“Welcome to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque,” the male voice said. “Proceed to the courtyard to begin the audio tour. The courtyard is big enough to hold 40,000 worshippers.”

Siobhan looked around the marble expanse, and pictured her whole Wisconsin town standing beneath the Dubai sun, with room to spare.

As she walked toward the entrance to the mosque she was entranced by the mosaic on the courtyard floor. Larger than life flowers inlayed with gems and stones stretched forward, and Siobhan knew it was the most perfect surface she had ever walked on. She veered to the left, following the stem of one massive flower has it angled toward the reflecting pool before bowing back toward the main dome.
