First Flying Passengers

Collection Did you know?

The first flying passengers in history were a sheep, a duck and a rooster. In fact, Louis XVI had asked the Montgolfier brothers to make a demonstration flight of their latest invention: a big balloon filled with hot air that can take a human being and whisk them up into the sky! To prove how safe it was, they placed 3 animals in the flight basket. The privileged passengers touched back down after a few minutes without a scratch, except for the duck, who suffered a broken leg upon landing! The duck and his 2 buddies were lucky enough to be admitted to the animal infirmary, in Versailles!
