NBC Fires Matt Lauer From ‘Today’ For 'Inappropriate Sexual Behavior’

Matt Lauer, was fired from his position as the host of the ‘Today’ show on Wednesday after a colleague reported that he had been involved in 'inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace.' The news came as a shock to many viewers and also NBC staff alike.

“This is a sad morning here at Today and NBC News. We learned this moments ago, just this morning. As you can imagine, we are devastated. And we are still processing all of this,” said Savannah Guthrie, who was almost in tears at the start of the television show on Wednesday morning.

“I will tell you, we do not know more than what I just shared with you. But we will be covering this story, as reporters, as journalists. I'm sure we'll learn more details in the hours and days to come. We promise to share that with you.”

In the statement, Guthrie explained that the formerly alleged offence against the popular host may not have been an isolated incident. During the airing of the show, she managed to keep her composure and get through the pieces without getting too upset.

“Hoda, I mean, you know, for the moment, all we can say is we are heartbroken. I'm heartbroken for Matt. He is my dear, dear friend and my partner. And he is beloved by many, many people here,” Guthrie said to co-host Hoda Kotb. “And I'm heartbroken for the brave colleague that came forward to tell her story and any other women who have their own stories to tell.”

Lauer joined the Today Show team back in the mid-nineties after initially being hired to fill in for another news reader. He has held the position of co-anchor since 1997. The staff on the show were told of his situation just moments before Wednesday’s show went live.
