No Re-Entry For Britons Who Join Terrorists Abroad, Says Defense Secretary
Are you a Briton who has joined a terrorist group abroad? Did you leave the UK to help ISIS? Well if your answer is yes, you should not be allowed to return to the country. That is the opinion of Defense Secretary, Gavin Williamson, who recently said those who were intent on bringing "destruction, death and bloodshed" onto the streets of Britain were being "hunted down" and that threat "eliminated".
In an interview with the Daily Mail, he said, "A dead terrorist can't cause any harm to Britain."
The words come after organizations in the UK said that authorities to attempt to "reintegrate" the "young" and "naive" jihadis “who travel to warzones, rather than prosecute them, on their return to the country.”
Williamson continued, “I do not believe that any terrorist, whether they come from this country or any other, should ever be allowed back into this country. Our job in terms of eliminating will not stop this year, will not stop next year, it is something we have got to continue to pursue."
There have been several hundred British citizens that have travelled to Syria to fight alongside Islamist groups during its six-year strong civil war. Approximately 850 people from the UK have travelled to support or fight for jihadist groups in Syria and Iraq.
In 2014 after reports of British women travelling to Syria to join Islamic State, stories of female foreign fighters started spreading like wildfire.
The Independent reported that “Although the media and the public seem shocked at the radicalization of young women — to the extent that they'd join IS — it shouldn’t come as a surprise. Indeed, there is no reason to think that women are less likely to become radicalized than men.”
“We have got to make sure that as [they] splinter and as they disperse across Iraq and Syria and other areas, we continue to hunt them down,” Williamson said. “Make sure there is no safe space for them, that they can’t go to other countries preaching their hate, preaching their cult of death.”
According to The Independent, the director general of MI5 told the Cabinet that a total of nine Islamist terrorist plots have been thwarted in the UK over the past year.
