Meet the next big fashion star: Snoop Dogg’s son
In 2016, 6-foot-3 Cordell Broadus left his position as a wide receiver on the UCLA Bruins team to pursue other interests.
Of the decision, head coach Jim Mora said: “He’s going to pursue other passions in his life and we encourage that. I appreciate the fact the [sic] came back out in the spring and gave it another shot. But this is an incredibly talented young man in so many areas and it’ll be fun to watch what he’ll do with his life. This won’t be the last we’ve heard from him, it’s probably just the start.”
What you probably wouldn’t expect is to see the son of rapper Snoop Dogg hitting the fashion stage.
Well, Mora was right. Broadus is incredibly talented, and he definitely burned up the runway during a successful New York Fashion Week.
“I’m just using fashion as a vehicle to open up more doors and opportunities for my entrepreneurialism further down the line,” said Broadus. “I’m going to use modeling as a branding platform so people can see my face and see my brain. I want to make movies like Marvel, and I want to tell stories.”
Even on the stage, Broadus keeps family close. His grandfather, Poppa Snoop (Vernell Varnado), joined him on the runway in an all-black Plein outfit with sneakers and sunglasses.
Of the experience, Poppa said: “I came up here just to be his guardian angel, and all of a sudden I get 2,000 followers in two days.”
Broadus has made big strides to follow his dream, and it hasn’t been an easy task.
“The hard part was telling my family,” he said, admitting how difficult it was to quit football.
“At the end of the day, you want to make your family happy, but more importantly I came to find out you should put yourself first and your happiness is the No. 1 priority. Ever since I made my decision, I’ve been tremendously happy and my family has supported me the whole way. It was pretty hard for my dad, but he adjusted to it and he accepted me for who I am.”
