17Nissan has been providing information to the Japanese Public Prosecutors Office and has been fully cooperating with their investigation

It said an investigation found that Ghosn and another board member, Greg Kelly, had been under-reporting Ghosn's compensation, according to the BBC and CNN.

In addition to being chairman of Nissan – which owns Britain's biggest car plant in Sunderland –Ghosn is chairman and chief executive of Renault and chairman of Mitsubishi Motors.

He is also chairman and chief executive of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Motors strategic alliance. Shares in Renault fell sharply after the news, dropping almost 13 percent. Nissan's announcement came after the close of trading in its shares in Tokyo.

Ghosn has been a towering figure of the motor industry for nearly 20 years. He is credit with a dramatic turnaround at Nissan in the early 2000s when the car firm was on the verge of bankruptcy.
