"Selfish. | The Beauty of Introspection," opened at Brooklyn's Brilliant Champions gallery on March 18th, 2016 and ran until April 8th. I sat down and talked to editor of Quiet Lunch Magazine, Akeem Duncan about why he jumped into the curation game, and why the name, "Selfish." Here's what he told me...

I thought about the existential significance of self-portraiture, what it means to the artist’s process … not being creative masturbation, it actually being a form of introspection and self-discovery ...

I feel like people need to know more about the artist without misunderstanding it as some kind of vainglorious kind of practice ... I wanted them to see self-portraiture with a different kind of value, especially us living in a society where we have the whole selfie thing going on…

I have this thing with my friends .. we talk about the difference between a self-portrait and a selfie. You go on my Instagram … when I took that picture I didn't just take it because I wanted to see myself on a screen and … look into some digital mirror. I took it because I wanted to capture a moment in my life. I wanted to capture a mood that I was in … I wanted time to remember me. I wanted you to remember me, even if just for a little while, and that's what I feel this self-portraiture is …

And also it's for me. I wanted to look inside myself, I wanted to see myself in this moment and step outside myself to look at myself only so I could understand myself better and then I could be a better self for We. I could be a better I for We, and that is what self-portrait is about ... it's not just a look at me and my cute face - I'm going to paint my face all day and all night … look I'm so talented…

That's why I have quotes from the artists talking about what self-portraiture means to them … it's a little more than just a whole bunch of artist faces … That's basically the reason I called it Selfish. It's because I wanted to take the negative word, and I wanted to add a positive connotation to it. I wanted to change the connotation of being selfish …

 … so being selfish doesn't mean going and taking someone's wife because you want them or stealing a coat or if you feel like taking up two seats in the train. That's not the version of being selfish that I'm talking … it's about being self-nurturing, paying attention to yourself and what your needs are and who you are and discovering yourself …

Too many people go throughout their whole lives without knowing themselves, and it's literally like living with a stranger - living ,breathing, walking, pissing, eating with a stranger. So you're never around anything familiar, because how can how can you get to know other people if you don't know yourself…

Some artists can be kind of shy, and they're not going to be as people oriented, but a lot of artists, they understand people. They understand themselves, and they make great friends, they make great companions, they make great lovers, and great brothers, great sisters, great fathers, great mothers and cousins ... they make great people. When you know more about yourself, you can be a better person to others, and these artists finding something within themselves ... to inspire you to find something that lives within all of us.
