Fashion Week Round-Up

New York, London, Paris and finally Milan; the world's fashion glitterati have all, I suspect, gone home for a good rest after showcasing the looks we’ll all be coveting come Spring 2018 at the four major Fashion Weeks.

First up - New York with a lighter schedule than usual after the departure of some key players, was all about the high-profile celebrity kids on the runway and a certain Kardashian off it, after that came London - full of tenacious emerging young designers, chomping at the bit to take the fashion world by storm.

Milan in contrast was all about the big hitters, the juggernauts of high fashion: Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana and who could forget that incredible Supermodel reunion at Versace: the biggest models of the past 20 years standing together draped in fluid shimmering gold.

And finally, the tradition and haute couture sensibility of Paris and another phenomenal Chanel spectacle at the Grand Palais.

Here’s my round up of the highlights of a month-long fashion extravaganza — and a peak at the key trends of the season.

First for the highlights: Rihanna opening her Fenty x Puma show on the back of a motocross bike

the moment Donatella recreated the Iconic shot of her brother Gianni Versace and his gaggle of supermodels, when Helmut Lang decided to ‘street-cast’ his models to source fresh raw talent — sending ‘Prison Bae’ down the runway (the male model cast after his police mugshot went viral)

Cindy Crawford's ‘mini me’ daughter Kaia stealing Kendall Jenner’s thunder literally everywhere — let's face it she does have the better fashion pedigree.

Onto what we learnt: What was clear is that the palette of the season is going to be bright bright bright; vibrant oranges, greens, yellows and fuchsias dominated, jewel tones aplenty on sumptuous fabrics — satin being a favourite creating fluid shapes and fairytale silhouettes.

Fringing was the embellishment of choice, with skirts, tops and dresses given the shake-ability factor. Come party season the fringe will be where it's at.

There was a real taste of the Orient present in the cuts and tailoring across the board with mandarin collars and kimono shapes given a modern twist.

Utility Chic and sports-luxe was back with specific attention to multiple zippers and pockets over layered separates.

Pink was everywhere in all hues from rose to peach to fuchsia, delicates pinks on ruffles and silks added romance and girliness to proceedings at Erdem, JW Anderson, Christopher Kane and Marqueś Almeida, and femmed-up suiting at Gucci and Emporio Armani.

Checked jackets were everywhere and this is one of the easiest trends to translate into your wardrobe for Spring although this is one trend already in the shops for Fall too.

In contrast ‘Americana’ was rife at NYFW: Calvin Klein and Coach showed sparkles and primary colors both optimistic and kitsch.

Two trends that might not be on your wish list next season though: heeled flip flops (seen at Fenty x Fuma) and Helmut Lang's Bra Bags - yes that's right: bags shaped like bras.
