Why ‘The Fate of the Furious’ is worthy of its box-office record
“The Fast and the Furious” franchise has entertained an audience that keeps growing bigger with each film. We’ve seen street racing, illegal border-crossing, clever heists, unimaginable stunts, cheesy comedy and likable characters. The franchise shows no signs of slamming on the brakes either, as the eighth installment just took in just over $530 million over Easter weekend and broke the global opening record previously held by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in 2015.
“The Fate of the Furious” is the latest movie in this fast-paced franchise, bringing in some of the biggest stunts and over-the-top action that we’ve seen yet. With a villain that is sure to make anyone’s blood boil, hilarious (albeit cheesy) dialogue, and cars falling from rooftops, this film entertains anyone looking for eye candy.
“The Fast and the Furious” movies are known for showing unrealistic action sequences, and the newest addition is no different, but the execution of these scenes in this installment is so well-done that anyone looking for a problem will find themselves smiling as the movie unfolds. Yes, it’s ridiculous. But it’s entertaining. While “The Fate of the Furious” contains scenes that will make physics professors lose their nerves, it’s the characters’ reactions to the events that make it all seem believable.
Without wanting to give a spoiler, one of the best scenes involves Jason Statham carrying a “package” while fighting his way through a lot of guys with guns. It’s one of the most absurd and hilarious scenes you’ll ever see in a “Fast and Furious” movie, and it’s hard to imagine what the franchise could do next to top it. This, in addition to over half the movie, had us rolling in our seats.
But apart from the action and the laughs, underneath a plot that’s serious about its ridiculousness, lies a story filled with emotion and heart. Like with all movies in this franchise, “The Fate of the Furious” does not deviate from the repeated theme of family. It delivers two hours of intense, exhilarating action that will entertain, excite, and even exhaust its viewers, but by the end successfully reminds us of the importance of the people in our lives.
“The Fate of the Furious” has taught us that even an eighth movie in a franchise has new things to offer. It manages to maintain what has made the movies so loveable, while adding enough things to give the franchise a new, fresh feel. This is the perfect movie to set up the franchise in its new direction. After all, two more installments have been announced for 2019 and 2021, respectively, while potential spin-offs are in the early stages of development.
It’s a future we’re excited to be a part of, and one that this movie really kicks into gear.
