A British researcher has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on the charge of spying for the UK. The case has triggered a diplomatic row. The UK government has said it is shocked at the verdict and promised full support to the accused, Matthew Hedges.

Hedges, 31, of Durham University, and his family say he is innocent. Hedges said he had been merely conducting research, reports the BBC.
