The lawyer of a Christian woman acquitted of blasphemy after eight years on death row has fled Pakistan to escape an attempt on his life..
The lawyer, Saif Mulook, told news agency AFP he had to leave so he could continue to represent the Christian woman, Asia Bibi, whose conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court on Wednesday.
Islamist party Tehreek-e-Labbaik (TLP) took to the streets on Wednesday after the acquittal, according to the BBC.
Officials have since struck a deal with protesters who have been demanding that Bibi’s death penalty be reinstated.
Bibi was convicted in 2010 of insulting the Prophet Muhammad during an altercation with neighbors.
Mulook told the BBC earlier this week she would need to relocate to a Western country for her own safety in view of the threat to her life.
Pakistani Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry defended the government against allegations that the deal reached with TLP, an Islamist party, meant yielding to extremists.
