Pittsburgh Shooting Accused Pleads Not Guilty

The alleged gunman charged with killing 11 Jewish worshippers at a Pittsburgh synagogue on Saturday has pleaded not guilty.

The accused, Robert Bowers, 46, has requested a jury trial, US media reported on Thursday.

He faces 44 counts of murder, hate crimes, obstructing religious practices, along with other crimes. He faces the death penalty.

Authorities called the attack on the Tree of Life synagogue the deadliest anti-Semitic act in US history.

US media reported that Bowers entered the courtroom without a wheelchair, bandaged on the arm from the injuries he received during a gun fight with police on Saturday.

During his first court appearance, he had come in a wheelchair and spoke little.

The court hearing comes the same day as crowds of mourners will lay more victims are buried and as their memorials continue to grow.

Bowers has been put up at the Butler County Jail without bond.
