Appetizers That Won’t Add To Your Girth


As the holiday season continues until New Year’s Day, you may be bombarded with – or at least surrounded by –scrumptious food. Are you worried about consuming calorific food that might make you gain weight? Studies have revealed that the average American gains about five pounds between Even if the weight gain is not that much, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year tempt us calories piled high on tables, and it makes sense to limit our intake of sinful temptations. One way is to eat and serve low-calorie appetizers: they are, well, low in calories and small in quantity. Focusing on appetizers means having the best of both worlds. You don’t have to fast, surrounded by food. You can take pleasure in eating without putting on calories and fat.

If you are the one doing the entertaining, consider making and serving these five appetizers, all 150 calories or less:

  • Roasted Walnut Halves: Walnut contains fat, but heart-healthy fat. 11 nut halves equal 150 calories.
  • Blue Corn Tortilla Chips with Hummus: Hummus is always a flavor-packed, but low-calorie option. And whole-corn tortilla chips have half the sodium of pita chips
  • Chocolate-Drizzled Strawberries: You can get your chocolate fix (prefer dark; it has half the sugar of milk chocolate). Just get chocolate sauce or melt some in a double boiler.
  • Shrimp Salad-Cucumber: These are lovely, quick appetizers you can put together in 30 minutes.
  • Lemon Chicken Kebabs: These are going to delight garlic lovers.

    1/4 lb. (115 g) cooked cleaned small shrimp, chopped

    1 stalk celery, finely chopped

    2 Tbsp. finely chopped red onions

    1/2 tsp. lemon zest

    1/8 tsp. black pepper

    3 Tbsp. thick yogurt, drained

    2 English cucumbers, each cut into 16 slices

    • Combine all ingredients except cucumbers.
    • Spoon onto cucumber slices

    Lemon Chicken Kebabs

    ¼ cup olive oil

    ½ teaspoon coarsely cracked pepper

    2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice

    3 garlic cloves, crushed

    1¼ pound skinless, boneless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces

  • Light charcoal grill or preheat broiler. Soak wooden skewers in water for about 20 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix oil, lemon juice, garlic, and pepper. Add chick and toss to coat; marinate for 15 minutes. Thread three or four chicken pieces onto each skewer; reserve marinade.
  • Grill chicken, basting frequently with marinade and turning after 6 minutes, until chicken is no longer pink but still succulent, 12-15 minutes. Or broil, turning frequently, for about 5 minutes.
