France World Cup Celebrations: Joy – And Rowdiness

France's 4-2 win against Croatia in the World Cup finals on Sunday sparked celebrations across the nation, but they were marred by vandalism in a few places.

Some 100,000 gathered at the foot of the Eiffel Tower to take in the action on big screens on Sunday. Once victory had been confirmed a party atmosphere took hold and went on long into the night, according to CNN.


A new generation of heroes had been born and, as if to prove it, their images were beamed 50 meters high on the Arc De Triomphe.

However, the euphoria led to violence in a few cities. Dozens of youths broke into a store on the Champs-Elysées and stole wine and champagne.

Two deadly accidents were linked to the win. One man in his fifties jumped into a canal in Annecy after the final whistle but fell on his neck and died of his injuries. Another man drove his car into a tree while celebrating.

Celebrations will continue. On Monday, Macron will welcome the team back to Paris and the players will make a bus parade up the Champs-Elysees avenue, where they are expected to be honored by hundreds of thousands of people.
