I’m Jane, a local dietician. Being a dietician, I know how a lot of people underestimate the role roughage plays in their diet. I often suggest my patients that they include food items that contain not just nutrients but roughage as well and most of them thank me for it.
Roughage, known to be the dietary fiber plays a key role in our overall health even though it is mostly indigestible. Through my studies, I’ve found that men need around 30-38 grams of fiber per day while women need around 21-25. This demand can be met by eating plenty of nuts, legumes, whole grains, and fresh fruits and vegetables.
Why I tell my clients to include roughage in their diet is because roughage helps your body improve its all-around functioning especially when it comes to digestion.
Here are some of the reasons why I tell my patients to consume more roughage –
- Regulates digestion
This insoluble fiber will provide the bulk in your intestines to help keep the food moving through the digestive tract. It also gives your body the ability to help relieve and prevent diarrhea and constipation.
- Aids in weight management
If you are working on weight management, it will help aid your efforts as roughage makes you feel full even when consuming fewer calories.
- Maintains cholesterol and blood sugar
It helps maintain healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels as it binds to the bile acids and removes the cholesterol from the body. It also allows down the absorption of sugar into your bloodstream.
- Disease prevention
It also reduces the risk of developing a number of forms of cancer including prostate, mouth, breast, stomach, colon, and others. It binds to the cancer-promoting toxins and removes them from the body.
