Populism on the Rise: Nontraditional Candidates to Watch in 2020

Would you like Mark Zuckerberg to be President, or do Facebook’s Orwellian practices make you feel queasy about his candidacy? How about Kanye West, who announced his intention late last year, stating: “Rappers are philosophers of our now, celebrities are the influencers of our now, just look at the president. [Trump] wasn’t in politics and won.” Other names who bow to neither the Democratic nor the Republican party floated include: Marianne Williamson, Mark Cuban, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and…

Restricting Protests: Crowd Control Methods Raise Questions

A U.S. federal judge recently placed restrictions on the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), ruling that the department's recent actions at protests in the area violated the demonstrators’ constitutional rights. According to a Huffington Post article, the protests took place in September after a “not guilty” verdict was rendered in the murder trial of Jason Stockley. He is a white police officer who killed Anthony Lamar Smith, who was black, in 2011.

US District Judge Catherine Perry …

Minority Report: Pre-crime Aero-cops Are Now A Reality In U.S.

I love Tom Cruise, especially his smile. In 2012, when Minority Report came out, I loved the neo-noir science fiction film directed by Steven Spielberg. I was intrigued and disgusted at the same time by its theme of employing a pre-crime system across the world to catch "perpetrators" before they commit "crimes." Today, this system is a reality in the US because of a company called Persistent Surveillance Systems (PSS), aka "Vigilant Solutions," and a few other corporations like them. PSS has fi…

Cannon Beach: Your Perfect Homebase On The Northern Oregon Coast

Cannon Beach, Oregon sits 40 miles south of the Washington State border. It's a town I had scoped out before I took my Oregon Coast trip and my stay there confirmed every good feeling I had about the place before I arrived.

Though the town only has a population of about 1,700 full time residents, in the summer — like many coastal Oregon towns — the population swells as 400,000 visitors come to enjoy Cannon Beach every year. It's an easy day trip from Portland, about 80 miles away on Highway 26.

It’s Time For The Two-Party System To End

Just last week, Republican Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona, who has disagreed often with President Donald Trump, announced he will not run for reelection, citing the ever growing negativity in politics. So too, a growing number of qualified people have purposely decided not to get involved in politics because of the same reason.

I believe this isn't because we don’t care about America; but, in fact because we care greatly. Under our system right now, however, many people believe that our leaders a…

Will Jefferson Become The 51st State?

If Mark Baird and Northern Californians like him have their way, the "time has come for 51." A movement to split California (which became the 31st state on Sept. 9, 1850) into two states is becoming more and more popular. The issue is fair representation of the people. When California became a state, it had about 1 million residents and representation stood at one representative for every 30,000 people. Today, California has grown to 38 million, the most populous state in the country. And becaus…
